Algeria Becomes A Major Coffee Consumer Country

On May 6, the important Algerian media "Motherland News" reported that Algerians like coffee very much. According to the "Coffee Market Report and Outlook" released by the International Coffee Organization (OIC) based in London, from 2021 to 2022, 175.6 million bags of coffee were consumed globally (one bag equals 60 kilograms), and 13 million bags were consumed in Africa. Ethiopia ranks first, Algeria ranks second, followed by Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia. These six countries account for 75% of Africa's total consumption.

Adults consume 3-4 kilograms of coffee per person per year, which is equivalent to the per capita consumption in France and the United States. A imports 130000 tons of coffee beans annually, with an import value of 300 million US dollars, of which Robusta coffee beans account for 85%. The main coffee suppliers in Afghanistan are Vietnam, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Brazil, Italy and Uganda. Vietnam is the largest coffee supplier in Afghanistan, and Afghanistan is also one of the top ten export markets of Vietnamese coffee coffee. In 2021, Afghanistan imported 56545 tons of Vietnamese coffee, worth 100 million US dollars.

The import tariff for coffee is about 63%, of which 30% is import tax, 19% is value-added tax, and 10% is domestic consumption tax. Only imported raw materials, namely coffee beans, are allowed. Strict import standards are implemented for roasted and processed coffee, such as roasted coffee with a sugar content of no more than 3% and a moisture content of less than 12.5%. Allow importers to mix Arabica coffee beans with Robista coffee beans for import, and also allow coffee beans from different countries to be mixed for import.

In recent years, coffee consumption in the African market has grown actively. Since 2017-2018, the average annual growth rate of coffee consumption in Africa has reached 2.6%, second only to Europe and the Americas. From 2021 to 2022, Africa produced 19 million bags of coffee, accounting for 11.4% of the world's total coffee production.
