On October 10th, foreign media reported that the French Ministry of Agriculture released a monthly report on Tuesday, raising its corn yield forecast for 2023 for the second consecutive month due to good crop growth since mid July.
The French Ministry of Agriculture expects the French corn harvest (excluding seeds) to reach 11.78 million tons in 2023/24, higher than the September forecast of 11.22 million tons and 10.6% higher than last year's yield reduction due to drought.
Nevertheless, the latest yield forecast is still 9.4% lower than the average yield over the past five years, reflecting a sharp decline in planting area.
The expected yield of soft wheat is 35.15 million tons, slightly higher than the forecast of 35.14 million tons last month, with a year-on-year increase of 4.3%.
The barley production has been increased to 12.25 million tons, an increase of 7.3% compared to 2022. This is mainly due to the increase in winter barley production to 9.66 million tons, higher than the September forecast of 9.6 million tons and a year-on-year increase of 14%.
The French Ministry of Agriculture has lowered rapeseed production by 30000 tons in 2023, from the forecast of 4.3 million tons last month to 4.27 million tons, 5.8% lower than last year.
The yield of sunflower seeds (also a summer crop) is expected to reach a record high of 2.17 million tons, higher than the predicted 2.08 million tons in September and a 38.5% increase from the five-year average.
