Corn crashes in Pennsylvania; beans boom in Ohio, New York

Record-low corn acres in Pennsylvania.

Record-high soybean acres in New York and Ohio.

Take a look at what local farmers are planting this spring, based on USDA's Prospective Plantings Report for the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Michigan and Ohio:

April corn, soybean and wheat acreage compared to 2024 in Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan

Corn acres are up in most states, following the national trend, but Pennsylvania's corn crop will be its lowest ever, at 970,000 acres. Last year, New York overtook Pennsylvania as the Northeast's largest corn-growing state by acres, and growers have indicated they will plant more corn this spring in the Empire State.

Michigan and Ohio each grow more corn acres than any other state in the region, although Ohio's corn acreage is down 4%.

Some of these corn acres in the Buckeye State likely will be planted to soybeans, as farmers indicated their intention to grow 5.1 million acres, a new record, and one that bucks the national trend of more corn, less beans.

Most states, except for New Jersey and Pennsylvania, are growing more soybeans, including New York, where growers are also planting a record-high crop.

Even with market woes, winter wheat acres are up in every state except for Delaware, where growers planted 21% less acres than in 2024. Michigan saw the biggest jump in winter wheat acres with 35% more acres planted last fall. That was after a record-low planting in 2024.

National view

Corn acres are estimated at 95.3 million acres, up 5%, or 4.73 million acres from last year. Planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 40 of the 48 estimating states, according to USDA.

Soybean acres are estimated at 83.5 million acres, down 4%. Planted acreage is down or unchanged in 23 of the 29 estimating states.

The winter wheat-planted area, at 33.3 million acres, is down 2% from the previous estimate and down less than 1% from last year. Of this total, about 23.6 million acres are hard red winter, 6.09 million acres are soft red winter, and 3.66 million acres are white winter.
