Mazatlán, Sinaloa, October 7, 2024.- This year, Mexico would continue to be the ninth producer of tomatoes in the world, since it is estimated that the harvest could reach 1.7 million tons, since until August it already records a cut close to 33.33 percent and there are good expectations.
According to Debate.com.mx, SIAP and SADER, in 2023, Mexico ranked 9th worldwide in tomato production and according to the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), total tomato production in Mexico for that year was 712,013 tons, which will be surpassed this year.
EXPORTS
According to Sader, tomato exports, especially to the United States, have registered a surplus in tomato exports of 2,306 million dollars, in addition to exports to Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Belgium and Japan.
Sinaloa leads national production with 20% of the national hectare, followed by the state of Michoacán, since according to SIAP, the state of Sinaloa planted 10,254.98 hectares this year.
The production expectation is estimated at 774,810.84 tons for the end of the agricultural cycle, with an increase of 8.8% compared to the year 2023 when a production of 712,013 tons of tomato was obtained, according to information from Debate.com.mx.
So far, according to Sader estimates, 593,021.81 tons of tomatoes have been harvested as of August 2024, the equivalent of 33.33% of the current national production, which reaches 1 million 779 thousand 210.67 tons.
As for the remaining crops this year, it is estimated that Mocorito is an indicator of national tomato production, contributing 2.73% of production, so the fruit is expected to emerge in 50 days and harvest in the first week of November.
However, in other regions such as El Gallo, El Tule, El Mezquite and Cahuinahuato, the harvest will be in mid-October and according to the same source, the first cuts of the year are sold in Culiacán, Los Mochis, Guasave, Guamúchil and Mazatlán and later in Guadalajara and El Bajío, such as Aguascalientes, Morelia and Ciudad Guzmán; while in Mexico City and Puebla they sell the third stage of the harvest.
