According to a recent report by Effe, business professionals consulted by Effe unanimously believe that with increasing corn production and available arable land, Brazil has surpassed the United States as the world's largest exporter of corn this year. Furthermore, thanks to its enormous potential, Brazil has the conditions to eventually replace the United States.
According to several industry associations in Brazil, unless the United States changes its export policies to stimulate exports, Brazil, with its increasing surplus, is eligible to continue to maintain its position as the world's largest corn supplier for many years to come.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Brazil harvested a record 130 million tons of corn during the 2022-2023 harvest period, an increase of 14.88% compared to the previous harvest period (2021-2022); This has increased Brazil's export volume by 7.23% to over 50 million tons.
In the United States, drought has reduced corn harvests from 380 million tons to 340 million tons, forcing exports to decrease to 41 million tons.
Brazilian industry experts believe that the production capacity of the United States is three times that of Brazil, so the United States can become the largest exporter again at any time.
However, to achieve this, the United States must change its policies and place greater emphasis on external sales, as it is also the largest food consumer and has a strong corn ethanol industry.
Experts point out that in the long run, Brazil will remain a major exporter, thanks to its enormous potential in expanding production.
According to experts, the corn planting area in Brazil is increasing at an average annual rate of 1 million hectares (reaching 22 million hectares by 2023), while the planting area in the United States has remained between 30 million and 35 million hectares in the past decade.
Experts believe that due to Brazil's continuous growth in production, planting area, and especially productivity, it may remain the world's largest supplier in the future.
According to relevant data from industry associations, the corn planting area in Brazil has doubled, from 13 million hectares in 2010 to 22 million hectares in 2022, and the production has tripled from 56 million tons in 2010 to 130 million tons in 2022.
This is attributed to a significant leap in productivity, with the yield of corn per hectare increasing from 4310 kilograms in 2010 to 5885 kilograms in 2023.
Therefore, Brazil has transformed from a peripheral exporter (exporting 7 million tons in 2020) to a world leader in corn exports: exporting 10.8 million tons in 2010, 33.4 million tons in 2020, and 55 million tons in 2023.
