Sodium Nitrate Crystalline Fertilizer

Product Overview

Sodium nitrate is an inorganic nitrate salt of sodium with the chemical formula NaNO₃. It appears as a white, crystalline solid that is odorless with a slightly sweet taste. Commonly known as Chile saltpeter, soda niter, or nitratine, it is distinguished from ordinary saltpeter (potassium nitrate).

The mineral form is called nitratine, nitratite, or soda niter, with large deposits historically mined in Chile.

3. Applications & Uses

Agricultural Industry (Primary Use)

Sodium nitrate is a high-nitrogen fertilizer (16-0-0 analysis – approximately 16.5% N). As a nitrogenous fertilizer, it provides readily available nitrate nitrogen for plant uptake.

Application Description
Direct application Used as a fast-acting nitrogen fertilizer for various crops
Fertilizer blends Component of compound fertilizers
Specialty crops Particularly effective for chloride-sensitive crops
Soil type Suitable for alkaline soils (provides nitrate without acidifying soil)

Role in Agriculture: Sodium nitrate has a role as a fertilizer, providing essential nitrogen for protein synthesis, chlorophyll production, and overall

Food Industry

Sodium nitrate is used as a food preservative, particularly in cured meats:

Application Function
Cured meats (bacon, ham, sausages) Inhibits bacterial growth (particularly Clostridium botulinum)
Color retention Maintains pink/red color of processed meats
Flavor enhancement Contributes to characteristic cured meat flavor
Preservative Extends shelf life of meat products

Regulatory Notes: Used in controlled amounts; excessive exposure may lead to health concerns including methemoglobinemia.

 Explosives & Pyrotechnics

Application Description
Explosives manufacturing Serves as an oxidizing agent
Pyrotechnics Used in fireworks and smoke bombs
Solid rocket propellant Oxidizer component
Smoke compositions Produces dense white smoke

 Glass & Ceramics Industry

Application Description
Glass manufacturing Improves melting process and enhances glass quality
Glass refining Acts as a clarifying agent
Pottery enamels Used in enamel formulations
Ceramic glazes Provides fluxing properties

Chemical Industry

Application Description
Nitric acid production Raw material for HNO₃ manufacturing
Sodium nitrite production Precursor for NaNO₂
Laboratory reagent Used in analytical chemistry
Nitration reactions With BF₃ forms efficient nitrating agent
Catalyst For H₂SO₄ manufacturing
